His Early Life

Mr Jek was the Prime Minister's political secretary from 1959 - 1963 . During his years of political campaign , he was responsible of writing Mr.Lee Kuan Yew's chinese speech .

He was Chinese - Educated . A student of the Chinese High School . He is politically active as a leader of the syudents's union aand editor of a wall mewspaper . Expelled froeom school in 1950 by the british for his involvement in student unrest and could not continue his stodies . In 1954 he became a journalist for a Chinese Newspaper and joined the PAP .

Mr.Jek was elected into the Legislative Assembly in 1963 . He represented the Queenstown constituency until his retirement from politics in 1980 . He was Minister for labour from 1963 - 1968 . Later appointed Minister of culture from 1976 - 1980 . After his retirement , he waas appointed Sinagpore's Permanent Representative to the United nationsFrom 1980 - 1985 .
